What is Canvas Commons?

Commons is a learning object repository.  You can think of Commons as a digital library that allows Canvas users to find, import and share learning resources with other users around the world.

What types of learning objects are available in Commons?

The resources available in Commons are: courses, modules, assignments, quizzes, discussions, pages, documents, videos, audio and images.

Can I import a resource into my course?

Yes! When clicking on Commons you will be taken to the Canvas Commons Repository, and from there you can search for resources based on a tag, name, institution or outcome.  When searching you can also specify the type of learning objectives, grade or level.

Resources created and shared by people from one institution are organised in what Canvas Commons calls Consortiums.  Once you click on Commons you will see the RMIT University Consortium on the left. This will allows you to filter to view the learning resources created by RMIT.

Important notes on Commons

When importing learning resources from Commons, please keep in mind the following:

  • If you choose to update a previously shared resource, the previous version will be replaced.
  • Do not update any resources imported on your course if you have students submissions linked to the course.
  • Make sure you select the correct course when importing and applying a resources from Commons. If you have access to different courses, it is very easy to import the learning object into the wrong course!
